Peter Dines founded Qualeris after a career spanning medtech leadership and investment.
Connect with PeterMy career has allowed me to see specialist healthcare and medical technology businesses from several perspectives: as an operator, as a chief executive, as an investor and as a board member. I have experienced the responsibility of leading businesses whose products, services and decisions matter to customers, regulators, team members and, ultimately, patients.
Over time, one question became increasingly important to me: what should happen to an exceptional founder-led business when its owner wants to step back, but does not want everything they built to disappear into a larger organisation or another ownership cycle?
I became increasingly interested in a small group of long-term compounders that had answered that question differently. They acquired excellent specialist businesses, preserved entrepreneurial responsibility, developed leaders and reinvested cash flows with discipline. Crucially, they did not build their model around selling those businesses again.
The more I studied them, the more passionate I became: what if we built that model specifically for MedTech products and services? And what if we built the kind of acquirer I would have wanted to sell my own company to where we continue to focus on the customer and the team and we share best practice around leadership development?
That is why Qualeris exists: to become a permanent, principled home for exceptional businesses and to leave every business, every relationship and every generation stronger than we found it.
“A good business should not have to be sold again simply because its owner’s fund has reached the end of its life.”
Peter worked in sales and marketing in medical devices before being appointed MD of medtech business Surgicraft at the age of 30. Under his leadership he turned the business around before selling the obstetric division and acquiring the UK Spine and Orthopaedic business to form Surgi C. He successfully exited this business in 2012 giving him both first-hand experience of leading a specialist regulated company, and responsibility for its customers, people and reputation.
He subsequently spent many years investing in and supporting growing businesses and has to date been involved in over 40 M&A transactions. His study of enduring compounders and long-term ownership models led to the creation of Qualeris: a permanent, decentralised home for exceptional MedTech products and services businesses and the people who built them.
Qualeris brings those experiences together. It is designed to be the kind of owner Peter would have wanted as a medtech chief executive: permanent, decentralised, disciplined and committed to developing future leaders.
